Briefing
Magí Pomés al Rif is a collection of postal card images that were used by Magi himself and his family during his mandatory time being part of the Spanish Army, in the early 1920s.
Magí Pomés was a Catalan citizen from the area around Tarragona, who came from a humble rural family and who rejected wart and its consequences. Unfortunately, the raw reality of his time forced him to take part in the Army and travel to North Africa, particularly, to the Rif region in Morocco.
The final project
Historical context
Magí Pomés was a witness to atrocities and catastrophes that can only be consequences of a war. For instance, postal cards show raw scenes like the days after the Massacre of Monte Arruit (August 9, 1921), in which 2.000 soldiers of the Spanish Army were killed after surrendering the Monte Arruit garrison near Al Aaroui following a 12-day siege.
Well-known figures from the history of Spain appear in these images, such as Primo de Rivera or Francisco Franco himself, who would later assume the government of the country.
